

In his over three decades long career, he served as secretary, industries in UP and Managing Director of Pradeshiya Industries and Investment Corporation of UP (PICUP).


In early 1990s, he was collector of Kheri dsitrict. For the coming fortnight, Swarup will be the Officer-in-Special Duty (OSD) in the ministry, working closely with outgoing coal secretary SK Srivastava before taking over the charge of coal secretary on October 31, 2014.Īn MA in political science, Swarup originally hails from Uttar Pradesh itself. Yet, the government did not want to take risks by straightaway appointing him as secretary in the ministry that has been mired with controversies over the years – the cancellation of all but four coal allocations since 1993 by the Supreme Court recently being the latest blow. Being the head of the Project Monitoring Group, a mechanism created by the last government to coordinate between warring ministries (for example, coal and power) and clear as many as 215 stalled projects valued at Rs 7 lakh crore, Swarup has been quite familiar… Anil Swarup, a 1981 batch UP cadre IAS and additional secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, will be the new coal secretary.
